Writing compliments for our peers on poster paper =) Counting up on a number line to figure out the "difference" between 2 numbers. Just one strategy we learned to help us subtract.

This week students have been faced with a number of challenges and have been using strategies to be successful in their endeavors.
Students have practiced greeting each other daily, remembering to greet everyone with eye contact and a smile. We've done some silly greetings- hand stacking and peeking underneath to say good morning, writing our names backwards and greeting each other (pronouncing noraa, eigroeg, aidualc, yt, icul, yelsna, xam, rolyat, eseer, sacul, asereht gave us all a giggle). They had to practice mirroring a partner and worked together to untie the "human knot". We had a great discussion about what helps us get "unstuck" when we are stuck (whether it's in a human knot, in a bad situation with friends, or stuck when reading/writing/doing math). The students have been doing a great job practicing their problem solving skills and I see them working hard to show "grit". They are pushing through problems and finding solutions and learning that it's ok to make mistakes as long as they learn from their mistakes and keep trying. Students also got to practice being the "teacher" and teaching a partner about what they learned. They are preparing for their presentation to the class about their biography. As the week drew to a close, the students began discussing the scores on their RJ's and I saw magic being made in their writing. I have begun giving them scores using the rubric in the front of their RJ, in addition to the notes. I hope that students will use the scores to see what they need to work on to improve their writing. I have seen significant improvement in their writing and can't wait to share their nonfiction pieces with you. This week we enjoyed some time indoors during the rain storm, and got new reading partners. The students are LOVING their partner reading books.

Some photos have gotten lost in the last month, but they have been found! From evaluating their own abilities, to building the classroom community during morning meeting greetings and activities, the students have become more aware of themselves and their peers. The length of day project graph has shown us how much shorter the days are getting. Reading scary stories in the dark! Our elf came this week, and was knocked down so the students wrote beautiful notes to the elf (practicing their cursive) and the elf felt better =) The Economics Fair was amazing and the students enjoyed every minute of it. The More Health presentation was very informative and the students enjoyed getting to participate in the demonstration:
3B did a wonderful job reading the prayer and Bible Verse at chapel. Thanks to Thea for the wonderful prayer! Students spent a lot of time this week learning about the colonists and reflecting on things to be grateful for as they learned about the first Thanksgiving. Congrats to our newly sorted students! Our 7 days of multiplication is complete, but we will continue to focus on our facts and have weekly practice sessions to further our understanding of the concept and memorization of facts. The students have practiced many ways to make the facts, including cup arrays:
