News from the Library- March 5th
Things have been really crawling here at the library. We’ve had over 100 baby
praying mantises hatch and mealworms turning into darkling beetles. The
Naturalist Center has been a big hit with our students. In addition, we have been
celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with fun read alouds and a cozy, colorful reading
area. Please feel free to visit the library anytime. Currently we are displaying some
amazing student artwork! Come check it out. There is also going to be a volunteer
training in the near future. Happy Reading!

PE:
During the second trimester students are beginning to work in groups for activities. Group work included Lost Treasure, Stuck in the Mud, Ultimate Frisbee, Stuff the Turkey, Chop Down Christmas Trees, Flickerball, Keep Away and Flag Football. Partner work included Frisbee Golf, throwing and catching a football and frisbee, double kickball and center-quarterback exchange for football.
News from the library
The third graders are doing a great job in the library. Their enthusiasm and excitement during storytime is infectious. They are always asking great questions and making strong predictions during the story. There are some real out-of-the-box thinkers in this group. We have been working on fiction, non-fiction, and biographies. They have also been using our on-line catalog system to find and locate books on their own. I recently read Me…Jane, a story about Jane Goodall as a child, and then watched a great video of her recently releasing a rescued chimp back into the wild. The children were so touched and moved by this experience. Please come see our winter wonderland in the library and check out a great book to read with your child.

Technology:
Here is the info on where students can watch their light show!
"The programmed lights will debut at the 92nd annual National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, which will be livestreamed by the White House on Thursday and air on PBS nationally throughout December in partnership with the National Park Foundation and National Park Service. The tradition of the tree lighting ceremony dates back to 1923 when President Calvin Coolidge lit the first fir tree outside the White House, and this is the first year kids from across the country will be in control of the state and territory holiday tree lights!"
Spanish:
The 2nd graders and 3rd graders have been reviewing family members. They have also been learning and practicing how to ask the question: "What is your mom's (etc) name" plus answering using complete sentences. Next week, we will start our unit about "Las Posadas", a holiday tradition in many Hispanic countries. They will take the lyrics home to practice.

Lessons & Carols is going to be here very soon. Students have been working hard to learn their anthem “The First Noel”. Congregational carols “Once in Royal David’s City”, “O Come All Ye Faithful”, and “Silent Night” were rehearsed.

In Drama, we created a play based off of a topic chosen by the student’s teacher (on top of acting lessons, games, and getting to know each other). We created these new works as a group and each student got to select/create their own character. We are rehearsing up a storm, but any assistance that parents can give the students on learning lines would be greatly appreciated (we only meet for 40 minutes a week). I will send out more information next week. Also, any help with your child’s costume would be greatly appreciated. No worries, there is no need to buy anything fancy.
Parents are invited to come see these plays on November 10 and 13:
3A- Community “The Haunted Hunters”
3B- Community “My Weird Family”

In 3rd Grade Technology we have been evaluating Internet resources. We have been discussing the questions that we need to ask ourselves when choosing a website for research and information. Who created the website? What does the URL tell you? When was the website created? Where does the information come from? Why should I use this website? It is important that students develop the skills needed to distinguish inaccurate information versus credible online resources.
Library News
Welcome back to books! The library is truly transforming into a literacy center with
an art museum feel. In addition to hearing some great literature, your children are
working with fun and engaging literacy centers. We even have a naturalist center
that currently has a chrysalis and a brand new butterfly, along with great books to
explain how that happens. The library is also showcasing artwork that has been
created by some of our students. International Dot Day was big fun. In addition to
listening to The Dot, our students have enjoyed Ish, and Sky Color to complete the
creatrilogy by Peter H. Reynolds. Third grade has been working on visualization
while being read to. Owl Moon by Jane Yolen gave vivid details for this activity. We
have also been discussing different genres of literature. The students have learned
about book care and how to use shelf markers to mark their spot on the shelves. As
always, students are encouraged to find and check out great books to enjoy at home.
Please let me know if you would like to volunteer in the library.

Students began the year exploring the different pathways to use around the gym. The theme for the first two weeks involved moving through the forest, helping squirrels gather nuts and becoming a snake or lizard. Students also tried to chase a dog’s tail. Tossing and throwing activities included a bean bag/hula hoop challenge, tossing yarn balls into a basket and throwing “junk out of my yard.”

Top 5 Reasons Why We Love Artsonia
1) It allows me to easily communicate what the students have been working on in art class with parents. Each exhibit features a short narrative about the learning objective. I am also able to share links to any relevant information to reinforce the lesson at home. Please check our our latest exhibit to see what we have been exploring in art class. There you should find your student's Keith Haring painting and a link to his website. This is the first of many American artists that will be exploring throughout this year.
2) Perhaps your extended family lives on the other side of the country but they still want to be involved in your child's education. With the fan club feature, we are able to easily share our art with family and friends. Over 10,000 visitors have visited our online gallery through the years. They can also post comments and help build the child's self esteem.
3) Our digital portfolio shows how we improve as an artist over the years. From Pre-K to 8th grade, our digital library of images grows with each child. Our goal is to post at least one image each month. Once it is archived, the art will lasts forever so you can look back on it years from now. Perhaps one day your child can show their own children their elementary artwork. We all know that some art gets crumpled, folded, torn, broken, lost or tossed over the years. Yet online, it is protected forever.
4) We can turn our art into thoughtful personalized gifts and earn money for our school. Artsonia gives back 20% to the art program. We have raised about $6000 since we started in 2006. They offer great personal gifts for family and friends. Thank you so much for your support.
5) Students are now able to access exhibits using a new classroom feature. They can easily publish their own art, post artist statements or receive feedback from the teacher. This feature offers a great way for the artist to reflect upon the process and share insight into their inspiration with others.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

3rd grade Spanish: These first two weeks, students have reviewed numbers and colors. We have been doing the calendar and talking about hot/cold weather. They have been learning to identify and recall school supplies vocabulary. I have been presenting short stories created by me. The students, in groups, have to answer questions about it. This is an introduction to reading/listening comprehension.
3rd Grade Music:
Third grade musicians began their first lesson by taking a musical tour of the room. They copied movements as they danced through paths around the instruments to the theme song from the World Cup soccer championships “Vida” by Ricky Martin. Upon completion of the song, they discussed things they saw in the room that were new or interesting to them. Classroom routines were established and each class created their own mission statement. To open the second music class, students began by mirroring Mrs. Swan with stretching movements. Warm ups also included echoing rhythm patterns using body percussion, reading rhythm patterns, and vocal warm ups. Students responded to attendance by solo singing “I’m here”. To conclude class, students played a drumming name game titled “What’s Your Name”. Students used their creativity to make decisions concerning the form of the piece and how they played their name for the class.
Mrs. Swan introduced the idea of joining our Saint Paul’s Singers and Orffestra #2. If your child is interested, more information can be found in this weeks’ Knightly News. Registration forms and descriptions can also be found on the Saint Paul’s website. If your child shows an interest in taking private piano, guitar, voice, drum kit lessons, or Lower School Rock Band, please email Mrs. Swan. ([email protected])
