We had our first spelling test. It wasn't anything they had experienced before. The words right now are simple, but the test was not. I used the words in sentences and felt free to add prefixes and suffixes to the words on the list. The students did their best and then, from my written sentences, edited their individual test. Editing is a crucial skill for Writer's Workshop. Our spelling tests offer the perfect opportunity to edit from a correct version. Students will develop their editing skills so they are adept at their own editing and as a classmate's resource in peer editing. As a beginning test, they were reasonably accomplished. I asked at the end for each student to note how they would improve his/her preparation for next week. They wrote me a sticky note with their thoughts.
I'm thrilled with their exploration of elapsed time. They learned a technique that uses an open number line, and a series of jumps to ascertain the elapsed time between two times. After some initial reluctance, the students demonstrated a strong use of this strategy. Ask to see.
