The third graders are thinking about the uses of place value in mathematics. They are learning to read and compare numbers up to 100,000. They are learning how a digit's value changes as its position in the number changes. They took part in some challenging thinking exercises in which they came to understand the relationships among numbers.
Sometimes strong effort and attention to detail create an excellent result.
Students share results of their individual work and learn from each other's efforts.
Students work on a thinking routine called, See, Think, Wonder. They are required to observe carefully, think about what they see, and finally wonder what the artist was trying to tell them, or what it makes the observer think.
3A has been very busy studying our summer reading book Stringbean's Trip to the Shining Sea. They have gone over each of the postcards that make up the clever story with intense observation in order to fully recognize how the story is enhanced by the postcards Stringbean and Fred send back home while traveling to the Pacific Ocean. The students then read the back of the postcard to understand all the cool adventures the brothers experience. The essential question for this book study is, "How does Stringbean Grow During His Trip?" The book is a tale of two journeys, one an adventure two brothers experience, and the other a journey towards maturity for eight year old Stringbean.
